The Daily Meal homepage
New site design launched March 2019

Here are some specific examples of stories, video and slideshows I’ve overseen and/or executed in the past few years.

EDITING:

The Daily Meal

Assign and oversee the publication of 20-30 stories, slideshows, videos and recipes per day.

Signature franchises:

The Best Food and Drink in Every State (a monster year-end project I conceived and oversaw where we take all the national lists we generate each year and compile them into a state-by-state guide)

101 Best Pizzas in America (I can’t take credit for this one, but it is the site’s signature offering and is a lot of fun to put together every year. For the most recent edition we rolled out all 101 on Instagram stories, 10 a day for 10 days during National Pizza Month in October)

55 Things You Can Do to Fight Hunger in America (because no one should go hungry)

Taste of the brand:

The 18 Biggest Food Stories of 2018 (from the death of Anthony Bourdain to the silliest viral food stunts, we covered them all)

I Went to the Craziest Grocery Store in America, and This Is What I Found

The Greatest Food Debates of Our Generation (we had a lot of fun coming up with these)

Dear Alex Trebek: I Survived Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer, So I Am Proof That There Is Hope (I commissioned and edited this story, which went viral, in early March 2019)

Original video:

The pasta-making Nonna
“Nonna” Dora Marzovilla, who makes nearly 20 pounds of pasta daily at her son’s restaurant in NYC, on why she still loves coming to work every day at the age of 83.

The ultimate frozen pizza taste test
We tried 19 different pizzas, and some were much better than others.

This is how PEZ are made
Over 12 million PEZ candies are made every day at the factory in Orange, Connecticut. Here’s how they do it!

OMJ.com

Lead assigning editor (one of many hats!) so I conceived and assigned most of the more than 3,000 stories published on the site. Note: The site is no longer live but its Instagram lives on.

TODAY.com

Highlights:

Special report: Homeschooling goes mainstream (lead editor on multipart series with web-only video, slideshow and stories, most of which have been archived)

Survey: 1 in 3 singles would choose food over sex (lead editor, helped conceive survey in coordination with Match.com, coordinated with marketing and broadcast)

Amanda Knox imagines life in prison with ‘letter to my unborn child’ (worked with her to polish and focus this essay, booked her and her sister for a web-only video with Carson Daly, an idea I conceived)

Editor: Anchor Jenna Wolfe’s TODAY parenting blog posts

At this modeling agency, ‘ugly’ is really beautiful (this story originally included a slideshow that generated more than 10 million page views in one day)

One of the biggest viral wins on my watch was this powerful story about a teenage girl with cancer being named an honorary CoverGirl. The Facebook link no longer exists, but the story got more than 800,000 likes and 18,000 shares on Facebook and helped helped TODAY.com win the EPPY award for social media that year.

Here are more of the kind of stories I assigned and edited at TODAY.com.

CourtTV.com (now TruTV.com)

Exclusive: In a series of articles at CourtTV.com, reporter Matt Bean (now EIC of Sunset Magazine) and I, working as his editor, exposed Miss Cleo’s psychics’ use of scripts. The story got national attention and after the stories were published the FBI launched an investigation of the company, which shut down about a year later. One of the original articles is here.

Journey to Terre Haute: From cradle to grave (a multimedia report but only text remains)

Hidden Traces: Cold cases that still haunt us (a series on the most fascinating cold cases, media and photos no longer available)
